Mudanda rock

Mudanda Rock, situated in the southwestern part of Tsavo East National Park, just a short drive south of the Manyani Gate, has a rich history dating back to the Precambrian era (between 570 and 4550 million years old).

Once utilized by local tribes for drying strips of meat (Mudanda) and as a lookout, it now stands as a significant landmark in the park.

Today, Mudanda Rock serves as a prime location for walking safaris, featuring a summit that offers panoramic 360° views of the park. This mile-long inselberg of stratified rock acts as a natural water catchment, supplying a dam below. It provides an exceptional vantage point for observing the hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that gather to drink during the dry season.
